Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, known as EMDR, is also offered by our therapists as part of a therapeutic treatment plan. EMDR is an extensively researched therapeutic treatment that has been used worldwide in the successful treatment of trauma.
EMDR is used in the treatment of complex trauma such as PTSD as well as anxiety, grief, panic disorder, sexual and/ or physical abuse, and unwanted memories to name just some issues addressed.
EMDR is used to help a client that may feel ‘stuck’ due to past experiences that are impacting them in the present. The person may note that they react or feel overwhelmed in day to day situations. With treatment the memory is retained but its intensity decreases, leading to more adaptive behaviours and functioning. Clients tend to notice changes quickly and describe new insights, behaviours and thoughts that are more adaptive and improved functioning. EMDR involves using a specific set of protocols, developed from various therapeutic approaches, by a trained practitioner.
